For the 2023 reopening of the historic Kitano hotel, Modellus Novus partnered with the hotel’s founding family and The Prince Hotels to present a new vision for Japanese hospitality in New York City. Dating back to the 19th century when the building was owned by the Rockefellers, the Kitano became the first Japanese-owned hotel in the city in 1973, and, as the preeminent destination for Japanese diplomats today, has honored that cultural identity since. In an effort to evolve yet honor the space’s history, MN’s design quietly celebrates Japanese heritage primarily in its creation of a warm, understated space that feels like coming home.

A counter to both the rush of adrenaline of the city around it and loud hospitality trends, The Kitano is discreet among the noise, with a timeless modern design that is reverent to the original design and warm millwork. Reimagining both the chef-driven cellar restaurant and 99 of the hotel’s rooms and corridors, MN has created decisive differentiation between spaces of interaction meant for gathering, engaging and exchanging and place of respites designed for contemplative retreat.
